Then Venerable Puṇṇiya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

Atha kho āyasmā puṇṇiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā puṇṇiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

1.2

“Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why sometimes the Realized One feels inspired to teach, and other times not?”

“ko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena appekadā tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti, appekadā na paṭibhātī”ti?

1.3

“Puṇṇiya, when a bhikkhu has faith but doesn’t approach,

“Saddho ca, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu hoti, no cupasaṅkamitā;

1.4

the Realized One doesn’t feel inspired to teach.

neva tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti.

1.5

But when a bhikkhu has faith and approaches,

Yato ca kho, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaṅkamitā ca;

1.6

the Realized One feels inspired to teach.

evaṁ tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti.

1.7

When a bhikkhu has faith and approaches, but doesn’t pay homage …

Saddho ca, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu hoti, upasaṅkamitā ca, no ca payirupāsitā …pe…

1.8

they pay homage, but don’t ask questions …

payirupāsitā ca, no ca paripucchitā …

1.9

they ask questions, but don’t lend an ear …

paripucchitā ca, no ca ohitasoto dhammaṁ suṇāti …

1.10

they lend an ear, but don’t remember the teaching they’ve heard …

ohitasoto ca dhammaṁ suṇāti, no ca sutvā dhammaṁ dhāreti …

1.11

they remember the teaching they’ve heard, but don’t reflect on the meaning of the teachings they’ve remembered …

sutvā ca dhammaṁ dhāreti, no ca dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhati …

1.12

they reflect on the meaning of the teachings they’ve remembered, but, having understood the meaning and the teaching, they don’t practice accordingly.

dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhati, no ca atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno hoti.

1.13

The Realized One doesn’t feel inspired to teach.

Neva tāva tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti.

2.1

But when a bhikkhu has faith, approaches, pays homage, asks questions, lends an ear, remembers the teachings, reflects on the meaning, and practices accordingly,

Yato ca kho, puṇṇiya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaṅkamitā ca, payirupāsitā ca, paripucchitā ca, ohitasoto ca dhammaṁ suṇāti, sutvā ca dhammaṁ dhāreti, dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhati, atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno ca hoti;

2.2

the Realized One feels inspired to teach.

evaṁ tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā paṭibhāti.

2.3

When someone has these eight qualities, the Realized One feels totally inspired to teach.”

Imehi kho, puṇṇiya, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgatā ekantapaṭibhānā tathāgataṁ dhammadesanā hotī”ti.

2.4

Dutiyaṁ.
