AN 8.60 Eight People (2nd) – Dutiyapuggalasutta

Bhikkhū, these eight people are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world.

“Aṭṭhime, bhikkhave, puggalā āhuneyyā …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa.

What eight?

Katame aṭṭha?

1.3

The stream-enterer and the one practicing to realize the fruit of stream-entry. The once-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of once-return. The non-returner and the one practicing to realize the fruit of non-return. The perfected one, and the one practicing for perfection.

Sotāpanno, sotāpattiphalasacchikiriyāya paṭipanno …pe… arahā, arahattāya paṭipanno.

These are the eight people who are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha puggalā āhuneyyā …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassāti.

Four practicing the path,

Cattāro ca paṭipannā,

2.2

and four established in the fruit.

cattāro ca phale ṭhitā;

This is the exalted Saṅgha,

Esa saṅgho samukkaṭṭho,

2.4

the eight people among sentient beings.

sattānaṁ aṭṭha puggalā.

3.1

For humans, those merit-seeking creatures,

Yajamānānaṁ manussānaṁ,

3.2

who sponsor sacrifices,

puññapekkhāna pāṇinaṁ;

3.3

making worldly merit,

Karotaṁ opadhikaṁ puññaṁ,

3.4

what’s given here is very fruitful.”

ettha dinnaṁ mahapphalan”ti.

Gotamīvaggo paṭhamo.

Tassuddānaṁ

4.1

Gotamī ovādaṁ saṅkhittaṁ,

dīghajāṇu ca ujjayo;

4.3

Bhayā dve āhuneyyā ca,

4.4

dve ca aṭṭha puggalāti.
