AN 8.53 Brief Advice to Gotamī – Saṅkhittasutta

 

1.1

At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

1.2

Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:

Atha kho mahāpajāpatī gotamī yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā mahāpajāpatī gotamī bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”

“Sādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saṅkhittena dhammaṁ desetu, yamahaṁ bhagavato dhammaṁ sutvā ekā vūpakaṭṭhā appamattā ātāpinī pahitattā vihareyyan”ti.

“Gotamī, you might know that certain things

“Ye kho tvaṁ, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi:

lead to passion, not dispassion;

‘ime dhammā sarāgāya saṁvattanti, no virāgāya;

2.4

to being fettered, not to being unfettered;

saṁyogāya saṁvattanti, no visaṁyogāya;

2.5

to accumulation, not dispersal;

ācayāya saṁvattanti, no apacayāya;

2.6

to more desires, not fewer;

mahicchatāya saṁvattanti, no appicchatāya;

2.7

to lack of contentment, not contentment;

asantuṭṭhiyā saṁvattanti, no santuṭṭhiyā;

2.8

to crowding, not seclusion;

saṅgaṇikāya saṁvattanti, no pavivekāya;

2.9

to laziness, not energy;

kosajjāya saṁvattanti, no vīriyārambhāya;

2.10

to being burdensome, not being unburdensome.

dubbharatāya saṁvattanti, no subharatāyā’ti,

You should definitely bear in mind that these things are

ekaṁsena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi:

2.12

not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacher’s instructions.

‘neso dhammo, neso vinayo, netaṁ satthusāsanan’ti.

3.1

You might know that certain things

Ye ca kho tvaṁ, gotami, dhamme jāneyyāsi:

lead to dispassion, not passion;

‘ime dhammā virāgāya saṁvattanti, no sarāgāya;

3.3

to being unfettered, not to being fettered;

visaṁyogāya saṁvattanti, no saṁyogāya;

3.4

to dispersal, not accumulation;

apacayāya saṁvattanti, no ācayāya;

3.5

to fewer desires, not more;

appicchatāya saṁvattanti, no mahicchatāya;

3.6

to contentment, not lack of contentment;

santuṭṭhiyā saṁvattanti, no asantuṭṭhiyā;

3.7

to seclusion, not crowding;

pavivekāya saṁvattanti, no saṅgaṇikāya;

3.8

to energy, not laziness;

vīriyārambhāya saṁvattanti, no kosajjāya;

3.9

to being unburdensome, not being burdensome.

subharatāya saṁvattanti, no dubbharatāyā’ti,

3.10

You should definitely bear in mind that these things are

ekaṁsena, gotami, dhāreyyāsi:

the teaching, the training, and the Teacher’s instructions.”

‘eso dhammo, eso vinayo, etaṁ satthusāsanan’”ti.
