AN 8.50 Winning in This Life (2nd) – Dutiyaidhalokikasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, a female who has four qualities is practicing to win in this life, and she succeeds at it.

“Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo idhalokavijayāya paṭipanno hoti, ayaṁsa loko āraddho hoti.

What four?

Katamehi catūhi?

It’s when a female is well-organized at work, manages the domestic help, acts lovingly toward her husband, and preserves his earnings.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo susaṁvihitakammanto hoti, saṅgahitaparijano, bhattu manāpaṁ carati, sambhataṁ anurakkhati.

And how is a female well-organized at work?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo susaṁvihitakammanto hoti?

2.2

It’s when she’s skilled and tireless in doing domestic duties for her husband …

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo ye te bhattu abbhantarā kammantā …pe…

That’s how a female is well-organized at work.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo susaṁvihitakammanto hoti.

3.1

And how does a female manage the domestic help?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saṅgahitaparijano hoti?

3.2

It’s when she knows what work her husband’s domestic bondservants, employees, and workers have completed, and what they’ve left incomplete. She knows who is sick, and who is fit or unwell. She distributes to each a fair portion of various foods.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo yo so bhattu abbhantaro antojano …pe…

That’s how a female manages the domestic help.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saṅgahitaparijano hoti.

4.1

And how does a female act lovingly toward her husband?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo bhattu manāpaṁ carati?

4.2

It’s when a female would not transgress in any way that her husband would not consider loveable, even for the sake of her own life.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo yaṁ bhattu amanāpasaṅkhātaṁ taṁ jīvitahetupi na ajjhācarati.

4.3

That’s how a female acts lovingly toward her husband.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo bhattu manāpaṁ carati.

5.1

And how does a female preserve his earnings?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo sambhataṁ anurakkhati?

5.2

It’s when she tries to guard and protect any income her husband earns …

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo yaṁ bhattā āharati …pe…

5.3

That’s how a female preserves his earnings.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo sambhataṁ anurakkhati.

5.4

A female who has these four qualities is practicing to win in this life, and she succeeds at it.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo idhalokavijayāya paṭipanno hoti, ayaṁsa loko āraddho hoti.

A female who has four qualities is practicing to win in the next life, and she succeeds at it.

Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo paralokavijayāya paṭipanno hoti, paraloko āraddho hoti.

What four?

Katamehi catūhi?

6.3

It’s when a female is accomplished in faith, ethics, generosity, and wisdom.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saddhāsampanno hoti, sīlasampanno hoti, cāgasampanno hoti, paññāsampanno hoti.

7.1

And how is a female accomplished in faith?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saddhāsampanno hoti?

7.2

It’s when a female has faith in the Realized One’s awakening …

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saddho hoti …pe…

7.3

That’s how a female is accomplished in faith.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo saddhāsampanno hoti.

8.1

And how is a female accomplished in ethics?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo sīlasampanno hoti?

8.2

It’s when a female doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie,

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe…

8.3

or consume alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.

surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.

8.4

That’s how a female is accomplished in ethics.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo sīlasampanno hoti.

9.1

And how is a female accomplished in generosity?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo cāgasampanno hoti?

9.2

It’s when she lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati …pe…

9.3

That’s how a female is accomplished in generosity.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo cāgasampanno hoti.

10.1

And how is a female accomplished in wisdom?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, mātugāmo paññāsampanno hoti?

10.2

It’s when a female is wise. She has the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering.

Idha, bhikkhave, mātugāmo paññavā hoti …pe…

10.3

That’s how a female is accomplished in wisdom.

evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, mātugāmo paññāsampanno hoti.

10.4

A female who has these four qualities is practicing to win in the next life, and she succeeds at it.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo paralokavijayāya paṭipanno hoti, paraloko āraddho hotīti.

11.1

She’s organized at work,

Susaṁvihitakammantā,

11.2

and manages the domestic help.

saṅgahitaparijjanā;

11.3

She’s loveable to her husband,

Bhattu manāpaṁ carati,

11.4

and preserves his wealth.

sambhataṁ anurakkhati.

12.1

Faithful, accomplished in ethics,

Saddhā sīlena sampannā,

12.2

being bountiful and rid of stinginess.

vadaññū vītamaccharā;

12.3

She always purifies the path

Niccaṁ maggaṁ visodheti,

12.4

to well-being in lives to come.

sotthānaṁ samparāyikaṁ.

13.1

And so, a lady in whom

Iccete aṭṭha dhammā ca,

13.2

these eight qualities are found

yassā vijjanti nāriyā;

13.3

is known as virtuous,

Tampi sīlavatiṁ āhu,

13.4

firm in principle, and truthful.

dhammaṭṭhaṁ saccavādiniṁ.

14.1

Accomplished in sixteen respects,

Soḷasākārasampannā,

14.2

complete with the eight factors,

Aṭṭhaṅgasusamāgatā;

14.3

a virtuous laywoman such as she

Tādisī sīlavatī upāsikā,

14.4

is reborn in the realm of the Loveable Gods.”

Upapajjati devalokaṁ manāpan”ti.

14.5

Dasamaṁ.

14.6

Uposathavaggo pañcamo.

15.0

Tassuddānaṁ

15.1

Saṅkhitte vitthate visākhe,

15.2

Vāseṭṭho bojjhāya pañcamaṁ;

15.3

Anuruddhaṁ puna visākhe,

15.4

Nakulā idhalokikā dveti.

15.5

Paṭhamo paṇṇāsako samatto.
