AN 8.5 Worldly Conditions (1st) – Paṭhamalokadhammasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, the eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around the eight worldly conditions.

“Aṭṭhime, bhikkhave, lokadhammā lokaṁ anuparivattanti, loko ca aṭṭha lokadhamme anuparivattati.

What eight?

Katame aṭṭha?

1.3

Gain and loss, fame and disgrace, blame and praise, pleasure and pain.

Lābho ca, alābho ca, yaso ca, ayaso ca, nindā ca, pasaṁsā ca, sukhañca, dukkhañca.

1.4

These eight worldly conditions revolve around the world, and the world revolves around these eight worldly conditions.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha lokadhammā lokaṁ anuparivattanti, loko ca ime aṭṭha lokadhamme anuparivattatīti.

2.1

Gain and loss, fame and disgrace,

Lābho alābho ca yasāyaso ca,

2.2

blame and praise, and pleasure and pain.

Nindā pasaṁsā ca sukhaṁ dukhañca;

2.3

These qualities among people are anicca,

Ete aniccā manujesu dhammā,

2.4

transient, and perishable.

Asassatā vipariṇāmadhammā.

3.1

A clever and mindful person knows these things,

Ete ca ñatvā satimā sumedho,

3.2

seeing that they’re perishable.

Avekkhati vipariṇāmadhamme;

3.3

Desirable things don’t disturb their mind,

Iṭṭhassa dhammā na mathenti cittaṁ,

3.4

nor are they repelled by the undesirable.

Aniṭṭhato no paṭighātameti.

4.1

Both favoring and opposing

Tassānurodhā atha vā virodhā,

4.2

are cleared and ended, they are no more.

Vidhūpitā atthaṅgatā na santi;

4.3

Knowing the stainless, sorrowless state,

Padañca ñatvā virajaṁ asokaṁ,

4.4

they who have gone beyond rebirth understand rightly.”

Sammappajānāti bhavassa pāragū”ti.
