AN 7.35 Easy to Admonish (2nd) – Dutiyasovacassatāsutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, tonight a deity … said to me:

“Imaṁ, bhikkhave, rattiṁ aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā …pe…

1.2

‘Sir, these seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.

‘sattime, bhante, dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti.

1.3

What seven?

Katame satta?

1.4

Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for samādhi; being easy to admonish, and good friendship.

Satthugāravatā, dhammagāravatā, saṅghagāravatā, sikkhāgāravatā, samādhigāravatā, sovacassatā, kalyāṇamittatā.

These seven things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu trainee.’

Ime kho, bhante, satta dhammā bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattantī’ti.

1.6

That is what that deity said.

Idamavoca, bhikkhave, sā devatā.

1.7

Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.”

Idaṁ vatvā maṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyī”ti.

2.1

When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Buddha:

Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

2.2

“Sir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement.

“imassa kho ahaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmi.

2.3

It’s when a bhikkhu personally respects the Teacher and praises such respect.

Idha, bhante, bhikkhu attanā ca satthugāravo hoti, satthugāravatāya ca vaṇṇavādī.

2.4

And they encourage other bhikkhū who lack such respect to respect the Teacher.

Ye caññe bhikkhū na satthugāravā te ca satthugāravatāya samādapeti.

2.5

And they praise other bhikkhū who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and substantively.

Ye caññe bhikkhū satthugāravā tesañca vaṇṇaṁ bhaṇati bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālena.

2.6

They personally respect the teaching …

Attanā ca dhammagāravo hoti …pe…

They personally respect the Saṅgha …

saṅghagāravo hoti …

They personally respect the training …

sikkhāgāravo hoti …

They personally respect samādhi

samādhigāravo hoti …

They are personally easy to admonish …

suvaco hoti …

2.11

They personally have good friends, and praise such friendship.

kalyāṇamitto hoti, kalyāṇamittatāya ca vaṇṇavādī.

2.12

And they encourage other bhikkhū who lack good friends to develop good friendship.

Ye caññe bhikkhū na kalyāṇamittā te ca kalyāṇamittatāya samādapeti.

2.13

And they praise other bhikkhū who have good friends at the right time, truthfully and substantively.

Ye caññe bhikkhū kalyāṇamittā tesañca vaṇṇaṁ bhaṇati bhūtaṁ tacchaṁ kālenāti.

2.14

That’s how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement.”

Imassa kho ahaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāmī”ti.

3.1

“Good, good, Sāriputta!

“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

3.2

It’s good that you understand the detailed meaning of what I’ve said in brief like this.

Sādhu kho tvaṁ, sāriputta, imassa mayā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa evaṁ vitthārena atthaṁ ājānāsi.

3.3

It’s when a bhikkhu personally respects the Teacher …

Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu attanā ca satthugāravo hoti, satthugāravatāya ca vaṇṇavādī.

3.4

And they encourage other bhikkhū who lack such respect to respect the Teacher.

Ye caññe bhikkhū na satthugāravā te ca satthugāravatāya samādapeti.

And they praise other bhikkhū who respect the Teacher at the right time, truthfully and substantively.
