1.1

Bhikkhū, these seven people found in the world are like those in water.

“Sattime, bhikkhave, udakūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What seven?

Katame satta?

1.3

One person sinks under once and stays under.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti;

One person rises up then sinks under.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati;

1.5

One person rises up then stays put.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti;

1.6

One person rises up then sees and discerns.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi;

1.7

One person rises up then crosses over.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā patarati;

1.8

One person rises up then finds a footing.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti;

1.9

One person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, and that brahmin stands on the shore.

idha pana, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.

And what kind of person sinks under once and stays under?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti?

2.2

It’s the kind of person who has exclusively dark, unskillful qualities.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo samannāgato hoti ekantakāḷakehi akusalehi dhammehi.

2.3

This kind of person sinks under once and stays under.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo sakiṁ nimuggo nimuggova hoti.

3.1

And what kind of person rises up then sinks under?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati?

3.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

3.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

3.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

3.6

However their faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom don’t last or grow, but dwindle away.

Tassa sā saddhā neva tiṭṭhati no vaḍḍhati hāyatiyeva, tassa sā hirī …pe…

tassa taṁ ottappaṁ …

3.8

tassa taṁ vīriyaṁ …

3.9

tassa sā paññā neva tiṭṭhati no vaḍḍhati hāyatiyeva.

This kind of person rises up then sinks under.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā nimujjati.

And what kind of person rises up then stays put?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti?

4.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

4.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

4.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

4.6

And their faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom lasts, neither dwindling nor growing.

Tassa sā saddhā neva hāyati no vaḍḍhati ṭhitā hoti.

Tassa sā hirī …pe…

4.8

tassa taṁ ottappaṁ …

4.9

tassa taṁ vīriyaṁ …

4.10

tassa sā paññā neva hāyati no vaḍḍhati ṭhitā hoti.

4.11

This kind of person rises up then stays put.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā ṭhito hoti.

5.1

And what kind of person rises up then sees and discerns?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi?

5.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

5.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

5.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

5.6

With the ending of three fetters they’re a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.

So tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā sotāpanno hoti avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo.

5.7

This kind of person rises up then sees and discerns.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā vipassati viloketi.

6.1

And what kind of person rises up then crosses over?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patarati?

6.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

6.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

6.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

6.6

With the ending of three fetters, and the weakening of greed, hate, and delusion, they’re a once-returner. They come back to this world once only, then make an end of suffering.

So tiṇṇaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā rāgadosamohānaṁ tanuttā sakadāgāmī hoti, sakideva imaṁ lokaṁ āgantvā dukkhassantaṁ karoti.

6.7

This kind of person rises up then crosses over.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patarati.

7.1

And what kind of person rises up then finds a footing?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti?

7.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

7.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

7.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

7.6

With the ending of the five lower fetters they’re reborn spontaneously. They are extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world.

So pañcannaṁ orambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ parikkhayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokā.

This kind of person rises up then finds a footing.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā patigādhappatto hoti.

8.1

And what kind of person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, a brahmin who stands on the shore?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.

8.2

It’s the kind of person who, rising up, thinks: ‘It’s good to have faith, conscience, prudence, energy, and wisdom regarding skillful qualities.’

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ummujjati sādhu saddhā kusalesu dhammesu, sādhu hirī …pe…

sādhu ottappaṁ …

8.4

sādhu vīriyaṁ …

8.5

sādhu paññā kusalesu dhammesūti.

8.6

They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

So āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

8.7

This kind of person has risen up, crossed over, and gone beyond, a brahmin who stands on the shore.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ummujjitvā tiṇṇo hoti pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.

9.1

These seven people found in the world are like those in water.”

Ime kho, bhikkhave, satta udakūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

Pañcamaṁ.
