AN 6.106 Craving – Taṇhāsutta

“Bhikkhū, you should give up these three cravings and three conceits.
“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā pahātabbā, tayo ca mānā.

What three cravings should you give up?
Katamā tisso taṇhā pahātabbā?

Craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving to end existence.
Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—

These are the three cravings you should give up.
imā tisso taṇhā pahātabbā.

What three conceits should you give up?
Katame tayo mānā pahātabbā?

Conceit, inferiority complex, and superiority complex.
Māno, omāno, atimāno—

These are the three conceits you should give up.
ime tayo mānā pahātabbā.

When a bhikkhu has given up these three cravings and these three conceits
Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno imā tisso taṇhā pahīnā honti, ime ca tayo mānā;

they’re called a bhikkhu who has cut off craving, untied the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.”
ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu acchecchi taṇhaṁ, vivattayi saṁyojanaṁ, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassā”ti.

Pātubhāvo ānisaṁso,

aniccadukkhaanattato;
