AN 6.15 Regret – Anutappiyasutta

There Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhū:
Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi:

“As a bhikkhu makes their bed, so they must lie in it, and die tormented by regrets.
“tathā tathāvuso, bhikkhu vihāraṁ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraṁ kappayato kālakiriyā anutappā hoti.

And how do they die tormented by regrets?
Kathañcāvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraṁ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraṁ kappayato kālakiriyā anutappā hoti?
2.1
Take a bhikkhu who relishes work, talk, sleep, company, closeness, and proliferation. They love these things and like to relish them.
Idhāvuso, bhikkhu kammārāmo hoti kammarato kammārāmataṁ anuyutto, bhassārāmo hoti …

niddārāmo hoti …

saṅgaṇikārāmo hoti …

saṁsaggārāmo hoti …

papañcārāmo hoti papañcarato papañcārāmataṁ anuyutto.

A bhikkhu who makes their bed like this must lie in it, and die tormented by regrets.
Evaṁ kho, āvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraṁ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraṁ kappayato kālakiriyā anutappā hoti.

This is called
Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso:

a bhikkhu who enjoys identity, who hasn’t given up identity to rightly make an end of suffering.
‘bhikkhu sakkāyābhirato nappajahāsi sakkāyaṁ sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāya’.
3.1
As a bhikkhu makes their bed, so they must lie in it, and die free of regrets.
Tathā tathāvuso, bhikkhu vihāraṁ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraṁ kappayato kālakiriyā ananutappā hoti.
3.2
And how do they die free of regrets?
Kathañcāvuso, bhikkhu tathā tathā vihāraṁ kappeti yathā yathāssa vihāraṁ kappayato kālakiriyā ananutappā hoti?
4.1
Take a bhikkhu who doesn’t relish work, talk, sleep, company, closeness, and proliferation. They don’t love these things or like to relish them.

This is called

a bhikkhu who delights in extinguishment, who has given up identity to rightly make an end of suffering.
‘bhikkhu nibbānābhirato pajahāsi sakkāyaṁ sammā dukkhassa antakiriyāyā’ti.
5.1
A beast who likes to proliferate,
Yo papañcamanuyutto,
5.2
enjoying proliferation,
papañcābhirato mago;
5.3
fails to win extinguishment,
Virādhayī so nibbānaṁ,
5.4
the supreme sanctuary.
yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ.
6.1
But one who gives up proliferation,
Yo ca papañcaṁ hitvāna,
6.2
enjoying the state of non-proliferation,
nippapañcapade rato;
6.3
wins extinguishment,
Ārādhayī so nibbānaṁ,
6.4
the supreme sanctuary.”
yogakkhemaṁ anuttaran”ti.
