AN 5.251 Who Should Give Ordination – Upasampādetabbasutta

Bhikkhū, ordination should be given by a bhikkhu with five qualities.

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā upasampādetabbaṁ.

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

It’s a bhikkhu who has the entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics,

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu asekhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti;

samādhi,

asekhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti;

wisdom,

asekhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti;

freedom,

asekhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti;

and the knowledge and vision of freedom.

asekhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti.

1.8

Ordination should be given by a bhikkhu with these five qualities.”

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgatena bhikkhunā upasampādetabban”ti.
