AN 5.239 Stinginess (1st) – Paṭhamamacchariyasutta

Bhikkhū, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities is cast down to hell.

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

1.3

They’re stingy regarding monasteries,

Āvāsamaccharī hoti;

1.4

families,

kulamaccharī hoti;

1.5

material possessions,

lābhamaccharī hoti;

1.6

and praise.

vaṇṇamaccharī hoti;

1.7

And they waste a gift given in faith.

saddhādeyyaṁ vinipāteti.

A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities is cast down to hell.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

2.1

A resident bhikkhu with five qualities is raised up to heaven.

Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge.

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

They’re not stingy regarding monasteries,

Na āvāsamaccharī hoti;

families,

na kulamaccharī hoti;

2.5

material possessions,

na lābhamaccharī hoti;

2.6

and praise.

na vaṇṇamaccharī hoti;

2.7

And they don’t waste a gift given in faith.
