AN 5.235 A Compassionate Bhikkhu – Anukampasutta

Bhikkhū, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities shows compassion to the lay people.

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu gihīnaṁ anukampati.

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

1.3

They encourage them in higher ethics.

Adhisīle samādapeti;

They equip them to see the truth of the teachings.

dhammadassane niveseti;

When they are sick, they go to them and prompt their mindfulness, saying:

gilānake upasaṅkamitvā satiṁ uppādeti:

‘Establish your mindfulness, good sirs, in what is worthy.’

‘arahaggataṁ āyasmanto satiṁ upaṭṭhāpethā’ti;

When a large bhikkhu Saṅgha is arriving with bhikkhū from abroad, they go to the lay people and announce:

mahā kho pana bhikkhusaṅgho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhū gihīnaṁ upasaṅkamitvā āroceti:

‘A large bhikkhu Saṅgha is arriving with bhikkhū from abroad. Make merit! Now is the time to make merit!’

‘mahā kho, āvuso, bhikkhusaṅgho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhū, karotha puññāni, samayo puññāni kātun’ti;

And they eat whatever food they give them, coarse or fine, not wasting a gift given in faith.

yaṁ kho panassa bhojanaṁ denti lūkhaṁ vā paṇītaṁ vā taṁ attanā paribhuñjati, saddhādeyyaṁ na vinipāteti.

A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities shows compassion to the lay people.”

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu gihīnaṁ anukampatī”ti.
