AN 5.233 Beautification – Sobhanasutta

1.1

Bhikkhū, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities beautifies the monastery.

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsaṁ sobheti.

1.2

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

1.3

They’re ethical, restrained in the code of conduct, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

Sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu;

1.4

They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā;

1.5

They’re a good speaker, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.

kalyāṇavāco hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagalāya atthassa viññāpaniyā;

1.6

They’re able to educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire those who approach them with a Dhamma talk.

paṭibalo hoti upasaṅkamante dhammiyā kathāya sandassetuṁ samādapetuṁ samuttejetuṁ sampahaṁsetuṁ;

1.7

They get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī.

1.8

A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities beautifies the monastery.”

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsaṁ sobhetī”ti.

1.9

Tatiyaṁ.
