AN 5.217 Uninspiring Conduct (1st) – Paṭhamaapāsādikasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, there are these five drawbacks of uninspiring conduct.

“Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā apāsādike.

What five?

Katame pañca?

1.3

You blame yourself.

Attāpi attānaṁ upavadati,

1.4

After examination, sensible people criticize you.

anuvicca viññū garahanti,

1.5

You get a bad reputation.

pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati,

1.6

You feel lost when you die.

sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti,

1.7

And when your body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.

These are the five drawbacks of uninspiring conduct.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā apāsādike.

There are these five benefits of inspiring conduct.

Pañcime, bhikkhave, ānisaṁsā pāsādike.

What five?

Katame pañca?

You don’t blame yourself.

Attāpi attānaṁ na upavadati,

After examination, sensible people praise you.

anuvicca viññū pasaṁsanti,

You get a good reputation.

kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchati,

You don’t feel lost when you die.

asammūḷho kālaṁ karoti,

2.7

And when the body breaks up, after death, you’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati.

2.8

These are the five benefits of inspiring conduct.”

Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ānisaṁsā pāsādike”ti.
