AN 5.178 Kings – Rājāsutta

 

1.1

“What do you think, bhikkhū?

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

Have you ever seen or heard

api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā:

1.3

of a person who has given up killing living creatures,

‘ayaṁ puriso pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭiviratoti.

1.4

and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

“No, sir.”

“No hetaṁ, bhante”.

“Good, bhikkhū!

“Sādhu, bhikkhave.

1.7

I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ:

1.8

‘ayaṁ puriso pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭiviratoti.

1.9

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti.

1.10

Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed:

Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti:

‘This person has murdered a man or a woman.’

‘ayaṁ puriso itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā jīvitā voropesīti.

1.12

Then the kings have them arrested for killing, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires.

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā pāṇātipātahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti.

Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

1.14

“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

“Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

“What do you think, bhikkhū?

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

Have you ever seen or heard

of a person who has given up stealing,

‘ayaṁ puriso adinnādānaṁ pahāya adinnādānā paṭiviratoti.

and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

“No, sir.”

“No hetaṁ bhante”.

“Good, bhikkhū!

“Sādhu, bhikkhave.

I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ:

‘ayaṁ puriso adinnādānaṁ pahāya adinnādānā paṭiviratoti.

2.9

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti.

Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed:

Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti:

‘This person took something from a village or wilderness, with the intention to commit theft.’

‘ayaṁ puriso gāmā vā araññā vā adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyīti.

2.12

Then the kings have them arrested for stealing …

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā adinnādānahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti.

2.13

Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

2.14

“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

“Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

3.1

“What do you think, bhikkhū?

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

Have you ever seen or heard

api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā:

of a person who has given up sexual misconduct,

‘ayaṁ puriso kāmesumicchācāraṁ pahāya kāmesumicchācārā paṭiviratoti.

3.4

and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

“No, sir.”

“No hetaṁ, bhante”.

“Good, bhikkhū!

“Sādhu, bhikkhave.

I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

‘ayaṁ puriso kāmesumicchācāraṁ pahāya kāmesumicchācārā paṭiviratoti.

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti.

Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed:

Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti:

‘This person had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection.’

‘ayaṁ puriso paritthīsu parakumārīsu cārittaṁ āpajjīti.

3.12

Then the kings have them arrested for that …

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā kāmesumicchācārahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti.

3.13

Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

3.14

“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

“Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

“What do you think, bhikkhū?

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

Have you ever seen or heard

of a person who has given up lying,

‘ayaṁ puriso musāvādaṁ pahāya musāvādā paṭiviratoti.

and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

“No, sir.”

“No hetaṁ, bhante”.

“Good, bhikkhū!

“Sādhu, bhikkhave.

I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

Mayāpi kho etaṁ, bhikkhave, neva diṭṭhaṁ na sutaṁ:

‘ayaṁ puriso musāvādaṁ pahāya musāvādā paṭiviratoti.

4.9

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti.

4.10

Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed:

Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti:

4.11

‘This person has ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’

‘ayaṁ puriso gahapatissa vā gahapatiputtassa vā musāvādena atthaṁ pabhañjīti.

4.12

Then the kings have them arrested for that …

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā musāvādahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti.

4.13

Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

4.14

“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

“Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.

“What do you think, bhikkhū?

“Taṁ kiṁ maññatha, bhikkhave,

Have you ever seen or heard

api nu tumhehi diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā:

of a person who has given up alcoholic drinks that cause negligence,

‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ pahāya surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratoti.

5.4

and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’”ti?

“No, sir.”

“No hetaṁ, bhante”.

“Good, bhikkhū!

“Sādhu, bhikkhave.

I too have never seen or heard of such a thing.

‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ pahāya surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratoti.

5.9

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇihetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karontī’ti.

5.10

Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed:

Api ca khvassa tatheva pāpakammaṁ pavedenti:

5.11

‘While under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, this person murdered a woman or a man.

‘ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto itthiṁ vā purisaṁ vā jīvitā voropesi;

5.12

Or they stole something from a village or wilderness.

ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto gāmā vā araññā vā adinnaṁ theyyasaṅkhātaṁ ādiyi;

5.13

Or they had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection.

ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto paritthīsu parakumārīsu cārittaṁ āpajji;

5.14

Or they ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’

ayaṁ puriso surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ anuyutto gahapatissa vā gahapatiputtassa vā musāvādena atthaṁ pabhañjīti.

5.15

Then the kings have them arrested for being under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires.

Tamenaṁ rājāno gahetvā surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānahetu hananti vā bandhanti vā pabbājenti vā yathāpaccayaṁ vā karonti.

5.16

Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”

Api nu tumhehi evarūpaṁ diṭṭhaṁ vā sutaṁ vā’”ti?

5.17

“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”

“Diṭṭhañca no, bhante, sutañca suyyissati cā”ti.
