AN 5.174 Threats – Verasutta

 

1.1

Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

“Householder, unless these five dangers and threats are given up, one is said to be unethical, and is reborn in hell.

“Pañca, gahapati, bhayāni verāni appahāya ‘dussīlo’ iti vuccati, nirayañca upapajjati.

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

2.3

Killing living creatures, stealing, committing sexual misconduct, lying, and using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.

Pāṇātipātaṁ, adinnādānaṁ, kāmesumicchācāraṁ, musāvādaṁ, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ—

Unless these five dangers and threats are given up, one is said to be unethical, and is reborn in hell.

imāni kho, gahapati, pañca bhayāni verāni appahāya ‘dussīlo’ iti vuccati, nirayañca upapajjati.

3.1

Once these five dangers and threats are given up, one is said to be ethical, and is reborn in heaven.

Pañca, gahapati, bhayāni verāni pahāya ‘sīlavā’ iti vuccati, sugatiñca upapajjati.

Killing living creatures, stealing, committing sexual misconduct, lying, and using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.

Pāṇātipātaṁ, adinnādānaṁ, kāmesumicchācāraṁ, musāvādaṁ, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ—

4.1

Anyone who kills living creatures creates dangers and threats both in the present life and in lives to come, and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from killing living creatures creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come, and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness.

Yaṁ, gahapati, pāṇātipātī pāṇātipātapaccayā diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, pāṇātipātā paṭivirato neva diṭṭhadhammikaṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na samparāyikaṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from killing living creatures.

Pāṇātipātā paṭiviratassa evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vūpasantaṁ hoti.

Anyone who steals …

Yaṁ, gahapati, adinnādāyī …pe….

Anyone who commits sexual misconduct …

Yaṁ, gahapati, kāmesumicchācārī …pe….

Anyone who lies …

Yaṁ, gahapati, musāvādī …pe….

Anyone who uses alcoholic drinks that cause negligence creates dangers and threats both in the present life and in lives to come, and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence creates no dangers and threats either in the present life or in lives to come, and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness.

Yaṁ, gahapati, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāyī surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānapaccayā diṭṭhadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato neva diṭṭhadhammikaṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na samparāyikaṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

8.2

So that danger and threat is quelled for anyone who refrains from using alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.

Surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratassa evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vūpasantaṁ hotīti.

9.1

Take anyone in this world

Yo pāṇamatipāteti,

9.2

who kills living creatures,

musāvādañca bhāsati;

9.3

speaks falsely, steals,

Loke adinnaṁ ādiyati,

9.4

commits adultery,

paradārañca gacchati;

9.5

and indulges in drinking

Surāmerayapānañca,

9.6

alcohol and liquor.

yo naro anuyuñjati.

10.1

Unless they give up these five threats,

Appahāya pañca verāni,

10.2

they’re said to be unethical.

dussīlo iti vuccati;

10.3

When their body breaks up, that witless person

Kāyassa bhedā duppañño,

10.4

is reborn in hell.

nirayaṁ sopapajjati.

11.1

A person in the world doesn’t kill living creatures,

Yo pāṇaṁ nātipāteti,

11.2

speak falsely,

musāvādaṁ na bhāsati;

11.3

steal,

Loke adinnaṁ nādiyati,

11.4

commit adultery,

paradāraṁ na gacchati;

11.5

or indulge in drinking

Surāmerayapānañca,

11.6

alcohol and liquor.

yo naro nānuyuñjati.

12.1

Giving up these five threats,

Pahāya pañca verāni,

12.2

they’re said to be ethical.

sīlavā iti vuccati;

12.3

When their body breaks up, that wise person

Kāyassa bhedā sappañño,

12.4

is reborn in a good place.”

sugatiṁ sopapajjatī”ti.
