AN 5.98 In the Wilderness – Āraññakasutta

Bhikkhū, a bhikkhu practicing mindfulness of breathing who has five things will soon penetrate the unshakable.

“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ānāpānassatiṁ bahulīkaronto nacirasseva akuppaṁ paṭivijjhati.

What five?

Katamehi pañcahi?

It’s when a bhikkhu has few requirements and duties, and is unburdensome and contented with life’s necessities.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu appaṭṭho hoti appakicco subharo susantoso jīvitaparikkhāresu;

They eat little, not devoted to filling their stomach.

appāhāro hoti anodarikattaṁ anuyutto;

They are rarely drowsy, and are dedicated to wakefulness.

appamiddho hoti jāgariyaṁ anuyutto;

They live in the wilderness, in remote lodgings.

āraññako hoti pantasenāsano;

They review the extent of their mind’s freedom.

yathāvimuttaṁ cittaṁ paccavekkhati.

A bhikkhu practicing mindfulness of breathing who has these five things will soon penetrate the unshakable.”

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu ānāpānassatiṁ bahulīkaronto nacirasseva akuppaṁ paṭivijjhatī”ti.
