AN 5.93 Declarations – Byākaraṇasutta

Bhikkhū, there are five ways of declaring enlightenment.

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, aññābyākaraṇāni.

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

1.3

One declares enlightenment out of stupidity and folly.

Mandattā momūhattā aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or because of wicked desires, being naturally full of desires.

pāpiccho icchāpakato aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or because of madness and mental disorder.

ummādā cittakkhepā aññaṁ byākaroti;

Or out of overestimation.

adhimānena aññaṁ byākaroti;

1.7

Or one declares enlightenment rightly.

sammadeva aññaṁ byākaroti.

1.8

These are the five ways of declaring enlightenment.”

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca aññābyākaraṇānī”ti.
