AN 5.80 Future Perils (4th) – Catutthaanāgatabhayasutta
1.1
“Bhikkhū, these five future perils have not currently arisen, but they will arise in the future.
“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.

You should look out for them
Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni;
1.3
and try to give them up.
paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
2.1
What five?
Katamāni pañca?
2.2
In a future time there will be bhikkhū who like nice robes.
Bhavissanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ cīvare kalyāṇakāmā.
2.3
They will neglect the practice of wearing rag robes and the practice of frequenting remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
Te cīvare kalyāṇakāmā samānā riñcissanti paṁsukūlikattaṁ, riñcissanti araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni;
2.4
They will come down to the villages, towns, and capital cities and make their homes there. And they will try to get robes in many kinds of wrong and inappropriate ways.
gāmanigamarājadhānīsu osaritvā vāsaṁ kappessanti, cīvarahetu ca anekavihitaṁ anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjissanti.

This is the first future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …
Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.
2.6
Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;
2.7
paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
3.1
Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who like nice almsfood.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ piṇḍapāte kalyāṇakāmā.
3.2
They will neglect the practice of walking for almsfood and the practice of frequenting remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
Te piṇḍapāte kalyāṇakāmā samānā riñcissanti piṇḍapātikattaṁ, riñcissanti araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni;
3.3
They will come down to the villages, towns, and capital cities and make their homes there. And they will try to get almsfood in many kinds of wrong and inappropriate ways.
gāmanigamarājadhānīsu osaritvā vāsaṁ kappessanti jivhaggena rasaggāni pariyesamānā, piṇḍapātahetu ca anekavihitaṁ anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjissanti.

This is the second future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …
Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.
3.5
Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;
3.6
paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
4.1
Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who like nice lodgings.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ senāsane kalyāṇakāmā.
4.2
They will neglect the practice of staying at the root of a tree and the practice of frequenting remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.
Te senāsane kalyāṇakāmā samānā riñcissanti rukkhamūlikattaṁ, riñcissanti araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni;
4.3
They will come down to the villages, towns, and capital cities and make their homes there. And they will try to get lodgings in many kinds of wrong and inappropriate ways.
gāmanigamarājadhānīsu osaritvā vāsaṁ kappessanti, senāsanahetu ca anekavihitaṁ anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjissanti.
4.4
This is the third future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …
Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.
4.5
Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;
4.6
paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
5.1
Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who mix closely with nuns, trainee nuns, and novice nuns.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ bhikkhunīsikkhamānāsamaṇuddesehi saṁsaṭṭhā viharissanti.
5.2
In such conditions, it can be expected that
Bhikkhunīsikkhamānāsamaṇuddesehi saṁsagge kho pana, bhikkhave, sati etaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ:
5.3
they will lead the spiritual life dissatisfied, or commit one of the corrupt offenses, or resign the training and return to a lesser life.
‘anabhiratā vā brahmacariyaṁ carissanti, aññataraṁ vā saṅkiliṭṭhaṁ āpattiṁ āpajjissanti, sikkhaṁ vā paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattissanti’.
5.4
This is the fourth future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …
Idaṁ, bhikkhave, catutthaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.
5.5
Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;
5.6
paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
6.1
Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who mix closely with monastery attendants and novices.
Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ ārāmikasamaṇuddesehi saṁsaṭṭhā viharissanti.
6.2
In such conditions it can be expected that
Ārāmikasamaṇuddesehi saṁsagge kho pana, bhikkhave, sati etaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ:
6.3
they will engage in storing up goods for their own use, and making obvious hints about digging the earth and cutting plants.
‘anekavihitaṁ sannidhikāraparibhogaṁ anuyuttā viharissanti, oḷārikampi nimittaṁ karissanti, pathaviyāpi haritaggepi’.
6.4
This is the fifth future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …
Idaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.
6.5
Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;
6.6
paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.
7.1
These are the five future perils that have not currently arisen, but will arise in the future.
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.
7.2
You should look out for them
Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni;
7.3
and try to give them up.”
paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabban”ti.
