AN 5.79 Future Perils (3rd) – Tatiyaanāgatabhayasutta

1.1

Bhikkhū, these five future perils have not currently arisen, but they will arise in the future.

“Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.

1.2

You should look out for them

Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni;

1.3

and try to give them up.

paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

2.1

What five?

Katamāni pañca?

2.2

In a future time there will be bhikkhū who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Bhavissanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

2.3

They will ordain others,

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññe upasampādessanti.

2.4

but be unable to guide them in the higher ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

2.5

They too will not develop their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

2.6

They too will ordain others,

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññe upasampādessanti.

2.7

but be unable to guide them in the higher ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

2.8

They too will not develop their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

2.9

And that is how corrupt training comes from corrupt teachings,

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso;

2.10

and corrupt teachings come from corrupt training.

vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

2.11

This is the first future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

2.12

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;

2.13

paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

3.1

Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

3.2

They will give dependence to others,

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññesaṁ nissayaṁ dassanti.

3.3

but be unable to guide them in the higher ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

3.4

They too will not develop their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

3.5

They too will give dependence to others,

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā aññesaṁ nissayaṁ dassanti.

3.6

but be unable to guide them in the higher ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi na sakkhissanti vinetuṁ adhisīle adhicitte adhipaññāya.

3.7

They too will not develop their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Tepi bhavissanti abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

3.8

And that is how corrupt training comes from corrupt teachings,

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso;

3.9

and corrupt teachings come from corrupt training.

vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

3.10

This is the second future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

3.11

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;

3.12

paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

4.1

Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

4.2

In discussion about the teachings and classifications they’ll fall into dark ideas without realizing it.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā abhidhammakathaṁ vedallakathaṁ kathentā kaṇhadhammaṁ okkamamānā na bujjhissanti.

4.3

And that is how corrupt training comes from corrupt teachings,

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso;

4.4

and corrupt teachings come from corrupt training.

vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

4.5

This is the third future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

4.6

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;

4.7

paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

5.1

Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

5.2

When discourses spoken by the Realized One—deep, profound, transcendent, dealing with emptiness—are being recited they won’t want to listen. They won’t pay attention or apply their minds to understand them, nor will they think those teachings are worth learning and memorizing.

5.3

But when discourses composed by poets—poetry, with fancy words and phrases, composed by outsiders or spoken by disciples—are being recited they will want to listen. They’ll pay attention and apply their minds to understand them, and they’ll think those teachings are worth learning and memorizing.

Ye pana te suttantā kavitā kāveyyā cittakkharā cittabyañjanā bāhirakā sāvakabhāsitā, tesu bhaññamānesu sussūsissanti, sotaṁ odahissanti, aññā cittaṁ upaṭṭhapessanti, te ca dhamme uggahetabbaṁ pariyāpuṇitabbaṁ maññissanti.

5.4

And that is how corrupt training comes from corrupt teachings,

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso;

5.5

and corrupt teachings come from corrupt training.

vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

5.6

This is the fourth future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, catutthaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

5.7

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;

5.8

paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

6.1

Furthermore, in a future time there will be bhikkhū who have not developed their physical endurance, ethics, mind, and wisdom.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhavissanti bhikkhū anāgatamaddhānaṁ abhāvitakāyā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā.

6.2

The senior bhikkhū will be indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion, not rousing energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

Te abhāvitakāyā samānā abhāvitasīlā abhāvitacittā abhāvitapaññā therā bhikkhū bāhulikā bhavissanti sāthalikā okkamane pubbaṅgamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vīriyaṁ ārabhissanti appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

6.3

Those who come after them will follow their example.

Tesaṁ pacchimā janatā diṭṭhānugatiṁ āpajjissati.

6.4

They too will become indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion, not rousing energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized.

Sāpi bhavissati bāhulikā sāthalikā okkamane pubbaṅgamā paviveke nikkhittadhurā, na vīriyaṁ ārabhissati appattassa pattiyā anadhigatassa adhigamāya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyāya.

6.5

And that is how corrupt training comes from corrupt teachings,

Iti kho, bhikkhave, dhammasandosā vinayasandoso;

6.6

and corrupt teachings come from corrupt training.

vinayasandosā dhammasandoso.

6.7

This is the fifth future peril that has not currently arisen, but will arise in the future …

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamaṁ anāgatabhayaṁ etarahi asamuppannaṁ āyatiṁ samuppajjissati.

6.8

Taṁ vo paṭibujjhitabbaṁ;

6.9

paṭibujjhitvā ca tassa pahānāya vāyamitabbaṁ.

7.1

These are the five future perils that have not currently arisen, but will arise in the future.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, pañca anāgatabhayāni etarahi asamuppannāni āyatiṁ samuppajjissanti.

7.2

You should look out for them,

Tāni vo paṭibujjhitabbāni;

7.3

and try to give them up.”

paṭibujjhitvā ca tesaṁ pahānāya vāyamitabban”ti.

7.4

Navamaṁ.
