1.1

Bhikkhū, there are these four things.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, dhammā.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

There are things that should be completely understood by direct knowledge.

Atthi, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pariññeyyā;

1.4

There are things that should be given up by direct knowledge.

atthi, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pahātabbā;

1.5

There are things that should be developed by direct knowledge.

atthi, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā bhāvetabbā;

1.6

There are things that should be realized by direct knowledge.

atthi, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā sacchikātabbā.

2.1

And what are the things that should be completely understood by direct knowledge?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pariññeyyā?

2.2

The five grasping aggregates.

Pañcupādānakkhandhā—

These are called the things that should be completely understood by direct knowledge.

ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pariññeyyā.

3.1

And what are the things that should be given up by direct knowledge?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pahātabbā?

3.2

Ignorance and craving for continued existence.

Avijjā ca bhavataṇhā ca—

3.3

These are called the things that should be given up by direct knowledge.

ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā pahātabbā.

4.1

And what are the things that should be developed by direct knowledge?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā bhāvetabbā?

4.2

Serenity and discernment.

Samatho ca vipassanā ca—

4.3

These are called the things that should be developed by direct knowledge.

ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā bhāvetabbā.

5.1

And what are the things that should be realized by direct knowledge?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā sacchikātabbā?

5.2

Knowledge and freedom.

Vijjā ca vimutti ca—

5.3

These are called the things that should be realized by direct knowledge.

ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhammā abhiññā sacchikātabbā.

5.4

These are the four things.”

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro dhammā”ti.
