AN 4.205 Eightfold – Aṭṭhaṅgikasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, I will teach you a bad person and a worse person,

“Asappurisañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asappurisena asappurisatarañca;

a good person and a better person.

sappurisañca, sappurisena sappurisatarañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….

And what is a bad person?

“Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappuriso?

2.2

It’s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong samādhi.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, micchāsaṅkappo hoti, micchāvāco hoti, micchākammanto hoti, micchāājīvo hoti, micchāvāyāmo hoti, micchāsati hoti, micchāsamādhi hoti.

This is called a bad person.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappuriso.

3.1

And what is a worse person?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro?

3.2

It’s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong samādhi. And they encourage others in these same qualities.

Idha bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca micchādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti;

attanā ca micchāsaṅkappo hoti, parañca micchāsaṅkappe samādapeti;

attanā ca micchāvāco hoti, parañca micchāvācāya samādapeti;

attanā ca micchākammanto hoti, parañca micchākammante samādapeti;

attanā ca micchāājīvo hoti, parañca micchāājīve samādapeti;

3.7

attanā ca micchāvāyāmo hoti, parañca micchāvāyāme samādapeti;

3.8

attanā ca micchāsati hoti, parañca micchāsatiyā samādapeti;

3.9

attanā ca micchāsamādhi hoti, parañca micchāsamādhimhi samādapeti.

3.10

This is called a worse person.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro.

4.1

And what is a good person?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappuriso?

4.2

It’s someone who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco sammādiṭṭhiko hoti, sammāsaṅkappo hoti, sammāvāco hoti, sammākammanto hoti, sammāājīvo hoti, sammāvāyāmo hoti, sammāsati hoti, sammāsamādhi hoti.

This is called a good person.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappuriso.

5.1

And what is a better person?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataro?

5.2

It’s someone who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. And they encourage others in these same qualities.

attanā ca sammāsati hoti, parañca sammāsatiyā samādapeti;

5.9

attanā ca sammāsamādhi hoti, parañca sammāsamādhimhi samādapeti.

5.10

This is called a better person.”
