AN 4.184 Fearless – Abhayasutta
1.1
Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
Atha kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
1.2
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

“Master Gotama, this is my doctrine and view:
“Ahañhi, bho gotama, evaṁvādī evaṁdiṭṭhi:
2.2
‘All those liable to death are frightened and terrified of death.’”
‘natthi yo maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassā’”ti.
2.3
“Brahmin, some of those liable to death are frightened and terrified of death.
“Atthi, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa;

But some of those liable to death are not frightened and terrified of death.
atthi pana, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
3.1
Who are those frightened of death?
Katamo ca, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa?
3.2
It’s someone who isn’t free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures.
Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco kāmesu avītarāgo hoti avigatacchando avigatapemo avigatapipāso avigatapariḷāho avigatataṇho.
3.3
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
3.4
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
3.5
‘The sensual pleasures that I love so much will leave me, and I’ll leave them.’
‘piyā vata maṁ kāmā jahissanti, piye cāhaṁ kāme jahissāmī’ti.
3.6
They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṁ kandati, sammohaṁ āpajjati.
3.7
This is someone who is frightened of death.
Ayaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
4.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who isn’t free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for the body.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco kāye avītarāgo hoti avigatacchando avigatapemo avigatapipāso avigatapariḷāho avigatataṇho.
4.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
4.3
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
4.4
‘This body that I love so much will leave me, and I’ll leave it.’
‘piyo vata maṁ kāyo jahissati, piyañcāhaṁ kāyaṁ jahissāmī’ti.
4.5
They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṁ kandati, sammohaṁ āpajjati.
4.6
This, too, is someone who is frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
5.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who hasn’t done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad, violent, and depraved things.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco akatakalyāṇo hoti akatakusalo akatabhīruttāṇo katapāpo kataluddo katakibbiso.
5.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
5.3
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
5.4
‘Well, I haven’t done good and skillful things that keep me safe.
‘akataṁ vata me kalyāṇaṁ, akataṁ kusalaṁ, akataṁ bhīruttāṇaṁ;
5.5
And I have done bad, violent, and depraved things.
kataṁ pāpaṁ, kataṁ luddaṁ, kataṁ kibbisaṁ.
5.6
When I depart, I’ll go to the place where people who’ve done such things go.’
Yāvatā, bho, akatakalyāṇānaṁ akatakusalānaṁ akatabhīruttāṇānaṁ katapāpānaṁ kataluddānaṁ katakibbisānaṁ gati taṁ gatiṁ pecca gacchāmī’ti.
5.7
They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṁ kandati, sammohaṁ āpajjati.
5.8
This, too, is someone who is frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
6.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who’s doubtful, uncertain, and undecided about the true teaching.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco kaṅkhī hoti vicikicchī aniṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme.
6.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
6.3
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
6.4
‘I’m doubtful, uncertain, and undecided about the true teaching.’
‘kaṅkhī vatamhi vicikicchī aniṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme’ti.
6.5
They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So socati kilamati paridevati, urattāḷiṁ kandati, sammohaṁ āpajjati.
6.6
This, too, is someone who is frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno bhāyati, santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
6.7
These are the four people liable to death who are frightened and terrified of death.
Ime kho, brāhmaṇa, cattāro maraṇadhammā samānā bhāyanti, santāsaṁ āpajjanti maraṇassa.
7.1
Who are those not frightened of death?
Katamo ca, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa?
7.2
It’s someone who is rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures.
Idha, brāhmaṇa, ekacco kāmesu vītarāgo hoti vigatacchando vigatapemo vigatapipāso vigatapariḷāho vigatataṇho.
7.3
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.

they don’t think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa na evaṁ hoti:

‘The sensual pleasures that I love so much will leave me, and I’ll leave them.’

This is someone who’s not frightened of death.
Ayaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
8.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who is rid of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for the body.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco kāye vītarāgo hoti vigatacchando vigatapemo vigatapipāso vigatapariḷāho vigatataṇho.
8.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
8.3
they don’t think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa na evaṁ hoti:
8.4
‘This body that I love so much will leave me, and I’ll leave it.’
‘piyo vata maṁ kāyo jahissati, piyañcāhaṁ kāyaṁ jahissāmī’ti.
8.5
They don’t sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So na socati na kilamati na paridevati, na urattāḷiṁ kandati, na sammohaṁ āpajjati.
8.6
This, too, is someone who’s not frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
9.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who hasn’t done bad, violent, and corrupt deeds, but has done good and skillful deeds that keep them safe.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco akatapāpo hoti akataluddo akatakibbiso katakalyāṇo katakusalo katabhīruttāṇo.
9.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
9.3
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
9.4
‘Well, I haven’t done bad, violent, and depraved things.
‘akataṁ vata me pāpaṁ, akataṁ luddaṁ, akataṁ kibbisaṁ;
9.5
And I have done good and skillful deeds that keep me safe.
kataṁ kalyāṇaṁ, kataṁ kusalaṁ, kataṁ bhīruttāṇaṁ.
9.6
When I depart, I’ll go to the place where people who’ve done such things go.’
Yāvatā, bho, akatapāpānaṁ akataluddānaṁ akatakibbisānaṁ katakalyāṇānaṁ katakusalānaṁ katabhīruttāṇānaṁ gati taṁ gatiṁ pecca gacchāmī’ti.
9.7
They don’t sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So na socati na kilamati na paridevati, na urattāḷiṁ kandati, na sammohaṁ āpajjati.
9.8
This, too, is someone who’s not frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
10.1
Furthermore, it’s someone who’s not doubtful, uncertain, or undecided about the true teaching.
Puna caparaṁ, brāhmaṇa, idhekacco akaṅkhī hoti avicikicchī niṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme.
10.2
When they fall seriously ill,
Tamenaṁ aññataro gāḷho rogātaṅko phusati.
10.3
they think:
Tassa aññatarena gāḷhena rogātaṅkena phuṭṭhassa evaṁ hoti:
10.4
‘I’m not doubtful, uncertain, or undecided about the true teaching.’
‘akaṅkhī vatamhi avicikicchī niṭṭhaṅgato saddhamme’ti.
10.5
They don’t sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion.
So na socati na kilamati na paridevati, na urattāḷiṁ kandati, na sammohaṁ āpajjati.
10.6
This, too, is someone who’s not frightened of death.
Ayampi kho, brāhmaṇa, maraṇadhammo samāno na bhāyati, na santāsaṁ āpajjati maraṇassa.
10.7
These are the four people liable to death who are not frightened and terrified of death.”
Ime kho, brāhmaṇa, cattāro maraṇadhammā samānā na bhāyanti, na santāsaṁ āpajjanti maraṇassā”ti.
11.1
“Excellent, Master Gotama! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
“Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
11.2
