AN 4.138 Retreat – Nikaṭṭhasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, these four people are found in the world.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

One is on retreat in body, but not mind;

Nikaṭṭhakāyo anikaṭṭhacitto,

1.4

one is on retreat in mind, but not body;

anikaṭṭhakāyo nikaṭṭhacitto,

1.5

one is on retreat in neither body nor mind; and

anikaṭṭhakāyo ca anikaṭṭhacitto ca,

1.6

one is on retreat in both body and mind.

nikaṭṭhakāyo ca nikaṭṭhacitto ca.

2.1

And how is a person on retreat in body, but not mind?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo hoti anikaṭṭhacitto?

2.2

It’s when a person frequents remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati.

2.3

But they think sensual, malicious, and cruel thoughts.

So tattha kāmavitakkampi vitakketi byāpādavitakkampi vitakketi vihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi.

2.4

That’s how a person is on retreat in body, but not mind.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo nikaṭṭhakāyo hoti anikaṭṭhacitto.

3.1

And how is a person on retreat in mind, but not body?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo hoti nikaṭṭhacitto?

3.2

It’s when a person doesn’t frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo naheva kho araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevati.

3.3

But they think thoughts of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness.

So tattha nekkhammavitakkampi vitakketi abyāpādavitakkampi vitakketi avihiṁsāvitakkampi vitakketi.

3.4

That’s how a person is on retreat in mind, but not body.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo hoti nikaṭṭhacitto.

4.1

And how is a person on retreat in neither body nor mind?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo anikaṭṭhakāyo ca hoti anikaṭṭhacitto ca?
