AN 4.91 Demons – Asurasutta

 

1.1

“Bhikkhū, these four people are found in the world.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

A demon surrounded by demons,

Asuro asuraparivāro,

1.4

a demon surrounded by gods,

asuro devaparivāro,

1.5

a god surrounded by demons, and

devo asuraparivāro,

1.6

a god surrounded by gods.

devo devaparivāro.

And how is a person a demon surrounded by demons?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo asuro hoti asuraparivāro?

2.2

It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, and their followers are the same.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussīlo hoti pāpadhammo, parisāpissa hoti dussīlā pāpadhammā.

2.3

That’s how a person is a demon surrounded by demons.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo asuro hoti asuraparivāro.

3.1

And how is a person a demon surrounded by gods?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo asuro hoti devaparivāro?

3.2

It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, but their followers are ethical, of good character.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo dussīlo hoti pāpadhammo, parisā ca khvassa hoti sīlavatī kalyāṇadhammā.

That’s how a person is a demon surrounded by gods.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo asuro hoti devaparivāro.

And how is a person a god surrounded by demons?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo devo hoti asuraparivāro?

4.2

It’s when a person is ethical, of good character, but their followers are unethical, of bad character.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sīlavā hoti kalyāṇadhammo, parisā ca khvassa hoti dussīlā pāpadhammā.

That’s how a person is a god surrounded by demons.

And how is a person a god surrounded by gods?

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo devo hoti devaparivāro?

5.2

It’s when a person is ethical, of good character, and their followers are the same.

These are the four people found in the world.”
