AN 4.71 Effort – Padhānasutta

“Bhikkhū, when a bhikkhu has four things their practice is guaranteed, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.

“Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu apaṇṇakappaṭipadaṁ paṭipanno hoti, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaṁ khayāya.

Katamehi catūhi?

It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, learned, energetic, and wise.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti, bahussuto hoti, āraddhavīriyo hoti, paññavā hoti.

When a bhikkhu has these four things their practice is guaranteed, and they have laid the groundwork for ending the defilements.”

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu apaṇṇakappaṭipadaṁ paṭipanno hoti, yoni cassa āraddhā hoti āsavānaṁ khayāyā”ti.
