AN 4.66 Greedy – Sarāgasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, these four people are found in the world.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

1.2

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

The greedy, the hateful, the delusional, and the conceited.

Sarāgo, sadoso, samoho, samāno—

1.4

These are the four people found in the world.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasminti.

2.1

Full of desire for desirable things,

Sārattā rajanīyesu,

2.2

enjoying things that seem pleasant,

Piyarūpābhinandino;

2.3

beings shrouded by ignorance,

Mohena āvutā sattā,

2.4

only tighten their bonds.

Baddhā vaḍḍhenti bandhanaṁ.

3.1

Born of greed, born of hate,

Rāgajaṁ dosajañcāpi,

3.2

born of delusion: the ignorant

mohajaṁ cāpaviddasū;

3.3

make bad karma

Karontākusalaṁ kammaṁ,

3.4

that afflicts and produces pain.

savighātaṁ dukhudrayaṁ.

4.1

If you act out of these qualities, that’s what you become.

Avijjānivutā posā,

4.2

But men shrouded by ignorance,

andhabhūtā acakkhukā;

4.3

are blind, with no eyes to see,

Yathā dhammā tathā santā,

4.4

and they never imagine that this could be so.”

na tassevanti maññare”ti.
