AN 4.61 Deeds of Substance – Pattakammasutta

 

1.1

Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

“Householder, these four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable are hard to get in the world.

“Cattārome, gahapati, dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

2.3

The first thing is the wish: ‘May wealth come to me by legitimate means!’

Bhogā me uppajjantu sahadhammenāti, ayaṁ paṭhamo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

3.1

The second thing, having got wealth by legitimate means, is the wish: ‘May fame come to me, together with my family and teachers.’

Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yaso me āgacchatu saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehīti, ayaṁ dutiyo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

4.1

The third thing, having got wealth and fame, is the wish: ‘May I live long, keeping alive for a long time!’

Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yasaṁ laddhā saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehi ciraṁ jīvāmi dīghamāyuṁ pālemīti, ayaṁ tatiyo dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

5.1

The fourth thing, having got wealth, fame, and long life, is the wish: ‘When my body breaks up, after death, may I be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm!’

Bhoge laddhā sahadhammena yasaṁ laddhā saha ñātīhi saha upajjhāyehi ciraṁ jīvitvā dīghamāyuṁ pāletvā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjāmīti, ayaṁ catuttho dhammo iṭṭho kanto manāpo dullabho lokasmiṁ.

5.2

These are the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.

Ime kho, gahapati, cattāro dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā dullabhā lokasmiṁ.

6.1

These next four things lead to the getting of those four things.

Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, catunnaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ cattāro dhammā paṭilābhāya saṁvattanti.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

6.3

Accomplishment in faith, ethics, generosity, and wisdom.

Saddhāsampadā, sīlasampadā, cāgasampadā, paññāsampadā.

7.1

And what is accomplishment in faith?

Katamā ca, gahapati, saddhāsampadā?

7.2

It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening:

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṁ:

7.3

‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’

‘itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi, satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti.

7.4

This is called accomplishment in faith.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, saddhāsampadā.

8.1

And what is accomplishment in ethics?

Katamā ca, gahapati, sīlasampadā?

8.2

It’s when a noble disciple doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or take alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe… surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti.

8.3

This is called accomplishment in ethics.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, sīlasampadā.

9.1

And what is accomplishment in generosity?

Katamā ca, gahapati, cāgasampadā?

9.2

It’s when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgo payatapāṇi vosaggarato yācayogo dānasaṁvibhāgarato.

9.3

This is called accomplishment in generosity.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, cāgasampadā.

10.1

And what is accomplishment in wisdom?

Katamā ca, gahapati, paññāsampadā?

10.2

When your heart is mastered by covetousness and immoral greed, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should.

Abhijjhāvisamalobhābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

10.3

Your fame and happiness fall to dust.

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

10.4

When your heart is mastered by ill will …

Byāpādābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

10.5

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

10.6

dullness and drowsiness …

Thinamiddhābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti kiccaṁ aparādheti.

10.7

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

10.8

restlessness and remorse …

Uddhaccakukkuccābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

10.9

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

10.10

doubt, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should.

Vicikicchābhibhūtena, gahapati, cetasā viharanto akiccaṁ karoti, kiccaṁ aparādheti.

10.11

Your fame and happiness fall to dust.

Akiccaṁ karonto kiccaṁ aparādhento yasā ca sukhā ca dhaṁsati.

11.1

Knowing that ‘covetousness and immoral greed are corruptions of the mind’, that noble disciple gives them up.

Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā abhijjhāvisamalobhaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

11.2

Knowing that ‘ill will …’ …

Byāpādo cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā byāpādaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

11.3

‘dullness and drowsiness …’ …

Thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

11.4

‘restlessness and remorse …’ …

Uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

11.5

‘doubt is a corruption of the mind’, that noble disciple gives it up.

Vicikicchā cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā vicikicchaṁ cittassa upakkilesaṁ pajahati.

12.1

When a noble disciple has given up these things,

Yato ca kho, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā abhijjhāvisamalobho cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

12.2

Byāpādo cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā byāpādo cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

12.3

Thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā thinamiddhaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

12.4

Uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

12.5

Vicikicchā cittassa upakkilesoti, iti viditvā vicikicchā cittassa upakkileso pahīno hoti.

12.6

they’re called ‘a noble disciple of great wisdom, of widespread wisdom, who sees what matters, and is accomplished in wisdom’.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, ariyasāvako mahāpañño puthupañño āpātadaso paññāsampanno.

12.7

This is called accomplishment in wisdom.

Ayaṁ vuccati, gahapati, paññāsampadā.

12.8

These are the four things that lead to the getting of the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.

Imesaṁ kho, gahapati, catunnaṁ dhammānaṁ iṭṭhānaṁ kantānaṁ manāpānaṁ dullabhānaṁ lokasmiṁ ime cattāro dhammā paṭilābhāya saṁvattanti.

13.1

There are four deeds of substance that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow.

Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi cattāri pattakammāni kattā hoti.

13.2

What four?

Katamāni cattāri?

13.3

To start with, with his legitimate wealth he makes himself happy and pleased, keeping himself properly happy.

Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi attānaṁ sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati.

13.4

He makes his mother and father happy …

Mātāpitaro sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati.

13.5

He makes his children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff happy …

Puttadāradāsakammakaraporise sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati.

13.6

He makes his friends and colleagues happy …

Mittāmacce sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati.

13.7

This is his first solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.

Idamassa paṭhamaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

14.1

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he defends himself against threats from such things as fire, flood, rulers, bandits, or unloved heirs.

Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi yā tā honti āpadā aggito vā udakato vā rājato vā corato vā appiyato vā dāyādato, tathārūpāsu āpadāsu pariyodhāya saṁvattati.

14.2

He keeps himself safe.

Sotthiṁ attānaṁ karoti.

14.3

This is his second solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.

Idamassa dutiyaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

15.1

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes five spirit-offerings:

Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi pañcabaliṁ kattā hoti—

15.2

to relatives, guests, ancestors, king, and deities.

ñātibaliṁ, atithibaliṁ, pubbapetabaliṁ, rājabaliṁ, devatābaliṁ.

15.3

This is his third solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.

Idamassa tatiyaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

16.1

Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he establishes an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins—those who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves—that’s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven.

Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi ye te samaṇabrāhmaṇā madappamādā paṭiviratā khantisoracce niviṭṭhā ekamattānaṁ damenti, ekamattānaṁ samenti, ekamattānaṁ parinibbāpenti, tathārūpesu samaṇabrāhmaṇesu uddhaggikaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ patiṭṭhāpeti sovaggikaṁ sukhavipākaṁ saggasaṁvattanikaṁ.

16.2

This is his fourth solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.

Idamassa catutthaṁ ṭhānagataṁ hoti pattagataṁ āyatanaso paribhuttaṁ.

17.1

These are the four deeds of substance that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow.

Sa kho so, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi imāni cattāri pattakammāni kattā hoti.

17.2

Whatever wealth is spent on something other than these four deeds of substance is said to be not a solid or substantive investment, and not used in the appropriate sphere.

Yassa kassaci, gahapati, aññatra imehi catūhi pattakammehi bhogā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ime vuccanti, gahapati, bhogā aṭṭhānagatā apattagatā anāyatanaso paribhuttā.

17.3

But whatever wealth is spent on these four deeds of substance is said to be a solid and substantive investment, used in the appropriate sphere.

Yassa kassaci, gahapati, imehi catūhi pattakammehi bhogā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ime vuccanti, gahapati, bhogā ṭhānagatā pattagatā āyatanaso paribhuttāti.

18.1

‘I’ve enjoyed my wealth, supporting those who depend on me;

Bhuttā bhogā bhatā bhaccā,

18.2

I’ve overcome losses;

Vitiṇṇā āpadāsu me;

18.3

I’ve given uplifting religious donations;

Uddhaggā dakkhiṇā dinnā,

18.4

and made the five spirit-offerings.

Atho pañcabalī katā;

18.5

I have served the ethical and

Upaṭṭhitā sīlavanto,

18.6

disciplined spiritual practitioners.

Saññatā brahmacārayo.

19.1

I’ve achieved the purpose

Yadatthaṁ bhogaṁ iccheyya,

19.2

for which an astute lay person

paṇḍito gharamāvasaṁ;

19.3

wishes to gain wealth.

So me attho anuppatto,

19.4

I don’t regret what I’ve done.’

kataṁ ananutāpiyaṁ.

20.1

A mortal person who recollects this

Etaṁ anussaraṁ macco,

20.2

stands firm in the teaching of the noble ones.

ariyadhamme ṭhito naro;

20.3

They’re praised in this life,

Idheva naṁ pasaṁsanti,

20.4

and they depart to rejoice in heaven.”

pecca sagge pamodatī”ti.
