AN 4.57 Suppavāsā – Suppavāsāsutta

 

1.1

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Pajjanika.

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā koliyesu viharati pajjanikaṁ nāma koliyānaṁ nigamo.

1.2

Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of Suppavāsā the Koliyan, where he sat on the seat spread out.

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena suppavāsāya koliyadhītuyā nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.

Then Suppavāsā served and satisfied the Buddha with her own hands with a variety of delicious foods.

Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhītā bhagavantaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.

When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, she sat down to one side.

Atha kho suppavāsā koliyadhītā bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

1.5

The Buddha said to her:

Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho suppavāsaṁ koliyadhītaraṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

2.1

“Suppavāsā, when a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients four things.

“Bhojanaṁ, suppavāse, dentī ariyasāvikā paṭiggāhakānaṁ cattāri ṭhānāni deti.

2.2

What four?

Katamāni cattāri?

2.3

Long life, beauty, happiness, and strength.

Āyuṁ deti, vaṇṇaṁ deti, sukhaṁ deti, balaṁ deti.

2.4

Giving long life, she has long life as a god or human.

Āyuṁ kho pana datvā āyussa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

2.5

Giving beauty, she has beauty as a god or human.

Vaṇṇaṁ datvā vaṇṇassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

2.6

Giving happiness, she has happiness as a god or human.

Sukhaṁ datvā sukhassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

2.7

Giving strength, she has strength as a god or human.

Balaṁ datvā balassa bhāginī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

2.8

When a noble disciple gives food, she gives the recipients these four things.

Bhojanaṁ, suppavāse, dentī ariyasāvikā paṭiggāhakānaṁ imāni cattāri ṭhānāni detīti.

3.1

When she gives well-prepared food,

Susaṅkhataṁ bhojanaṁ yā dadāti,

3.2

pure, fine, and full of flavor,

Suciṁ paṇītaṁ rasasā upetaṁ;

3.3

that offering—given to the upright,

Sā dakkhiṇā ujjugatesu dinnā,

3.4

who have good conduct, and are big-hearted—

Caraṇūpapannesu mahaggatesu;

3.5

joins merit to merit. It’s very fruitful,

Puññena puññaṁ saṁsandamānā,

3.6

and is praised by those who know the world.

Mahapphalā lokavidūna vaṇṇitā.

4.1

Those who recall such sacrifices,

Etādisaṁ yaññamanussarantā,

4.2

live in the world full of inspiration.

Ye vedajātā vicaranti loke;

4.3

They’ve driven out the stain of stinginess, root and all,

Vineyya maccheramalaṁ samūlaṁ,

4.4

blameless, they go to a heavenly place.”

Aninditā saggamupenti ṭhānan”ti.
