AN 4.50 Corruptions – Upakkilesasutta

Bhikkhū, these four corruptions obscure the sun and moon, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, candimasūriyānaṁ upakkilesā, yehi upakkilesehi upakkiliṭṭhā candimasūriyā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

An eclipse of Rāhu, lord of demons …

Rāhu, bhikkhave, asurindo candimasūriyānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliṭṭhā candimasūriyā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

These are four corruptions that obscure the sun and moon, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro candimasūriyānaṁ upakkilesā, yehi upakkilesehi upakkiliṭṭhā candimasūriyā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

In the same way, these four things corrupt ascetics and brahmins, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattārome samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkilesā, yehi upakkilesehi upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

There are some ascetics and brahmins who drink liquor, not avoiding drinking liquor.

Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā suraṁ pivanti merayaṁ, surāmerayapānā appaṭiviratā.

5.4

This is the first thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins …

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

6.1

There are some ascetics and brahmins who have sex, not avoiding sex.

Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā methunaṁ dhammaṁ paṭisevanti, methunasmā dhammā appaṭiviratā.

6.2

This is the second thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins …

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

There are some ascetics and brahmins who accept gold and money, not avoiding receiving gold and money.

Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā jātarūparajataṁ sādiyanti, jātarūparajatapaṭiggahaṇā appaṭiviratā.

7.2

This is the third thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins …

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

8.1

There are some ascetics and brahmins who make a living the wrong way, not avoiding wrong livelihood.

Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā micchājīvena jīvanti, micchājīvā appaṭiviratā.

8.2

This is the fourth thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins …

Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

8.3

These are four things that corrupt ascetics and brahmins, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkilesā, yehi upakkilesehi upakkiliṭṭhā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocantīti.

9.1

Some ascetics and brahmins

Rāgadosaparikkiṭṭhā,

9.2

are plagued by greed and hate;

eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā;

9.3

men shrouded by ignorance,

Avijjānivutā posā,

9.4

enjoying things that seem pleasant.

piyarūpābhinandino.

10.1

Drinking liquor,

Suraṁ pivanti merayaṁ,

10.2

having sex,

paṭisevanti methunaṁ;

10.3

accepting money and gold:

Rajataṁ jātarūpañca,

10.4

they’re ignorant.

sādiyanti aviddasū;

10.5

Some ascetics and brahmins

Micchājīvena jīvanti,

10.6

make a living the wrong way.

eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā.

11.1

These corruptions were spoken of

Ete upakkilesā vuttā,

11.2

by the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun.

buddhenādiccabandhunā;

11.3

When corrupted by these,

Yehi upakkilesehi,

11.4

some ascetics and brahmins

eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā;

11.5

don’t shine or glow.

Na tapanti na bhāsanti,

11.6

Impure, dirty creatures,

asuddhā sarajā magā.

12.1

shrouded in darkness,

Andhakārena onaddhā,

12.2

bondservants of craving, full of attachments,

taṇhādāsā sanettikā;

12.3

swell the horrors of the charnel ground,

Vaḍḍhenti kaṭasiṁ ghoraṁ,

12.4

taking up future lives.

ādiyanti punabbhavan”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

12.6

Rohitassavaggo pañcamo.

Tassuddānaṁ

13.1

Samādhipañhā dve kodhā,

13.2

Rohitassāpare duve;

13.3

Suvidūravisākhavipallāsā,

13.4

Upakkilesena te dasāti.

13.5

Paṭhamo paṇṇāsako samatto.
