Bhikkhū, these four things oppose the true teaching.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, asaddhammā.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

Valuing anger, denigration, material possessions, and honor rather than the true teaching.

Kodhagarutā na saddhammagarutā, makkhagarutā na saddhammagarutā, lābhagarutā na saddhammagarutā, sakkāragarutā na saddhammagarutā.

These are the four things that oppose the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro asaddhammā.

These four things are the true teaching.

Cattārome, bhikkhave, saddhammā.

What four?

Katame cattāro?

2.3

Valuing the true teaching rather than anger, denigration, material possessions, and honor.

Saddhammagarutā na kodhagarutā, saddhammagarutā na makkhagarutā, saddhammagarutā na lābhagarutā, saddhammagarutā na sakkāragarutā.

These are the four things that are the true teaching.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro saddhammāti.

3.1

A bhikkhu who values anger and denigration,

Kodhamakkhagaru bhikkhu,

3.2

possessions and honor,

lābhasakkāragāravo;

3.3

doesn’t grow in the true teaching,

Sukhette pūtibījaṁva,

3.4

like a rotten seed in a good field.

saddhamme na virūhati.

4.1

But those who value the true teaching,

Ye ca saddhammagaruno,

4.2

who have lived it, and are living it now,

vihaṁsu viharanti ca;

4.3

these do grow in the teaching,

Te ve dhamme virūhanti,

4.4

like well-watered herbs.”

snehānvayamivosadhā”ti.
