AN 4.16 Subtlety – Sokhummasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, there are these four kinds of subtlety.

“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, sokhummāni.

What four?

Katamāni cattāri?

1.3

A bhikkhu has ultimate subtlety of form.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu rūpasokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;

They don’t see any other subtlety of form that’s better or finer than that,

tena ca rūpasokhummena aññaṁ rūpasokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na samanupassati;

nor do they aim for it.

tena ca rūpasokhummena aññaṁ rūpasokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na pattheti.

1.6

A bhikkhu has ultimate subtlety of feeling.

Vedanāsokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;

They don’t see any other subtlety of feeling that’s better or finer than that,

tena ca vedanāsokhummena aññaṁ vedanāsokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na samanupassati;

nor do they aim for it.

tena ca vedanāsokhummena aññaṁ vedanāsokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na pattheti.

A bhikkhu has ultimate subtlety of perception.

Saññāsokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;

They don’t see any other subtlety of perception that’s better or finer than that,

tena ca saññāsokhummena aññaṁ saññāsokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na samanupassati;

nor do they aim for it.

tena ca saññāsokhummena aññaṁ saññāsokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na pattheti.

1.12

A bhikkhu has ultimate subtlety of saṅkhāra.

Saṅkhārasokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;

They don’t see any other subtlety of saṅkhāra that’s better or finer than that,

tena ca saṅkhārasokhummena aññaṁ saṅkhārasokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na samanupassati;

nor do they aim for it.

tena ca saṅkhārasokhummena aññaṁ saṅkhārasokhummaṁ uttaritaraṁ vā paṇītataraṁ vā na pattheti.

1.15

These are the four kinds of subtlety.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri sokhummānīti.

2.1

Knowing the subtlety of form,

Rūpasokhummataṁ ñatvā,

2.2

the cause of feelings,

vedanānañca sambhavaṁ;

2.3

where perception comes from,

Saññā yato samudeti,

2.4

and where it ends;

atthaṁ gacchati yattha ca;

2.5

and knowing saṅkhāra as other,

Saṅkhāre parato ñatvā,

2.6

as suffering and as not-self,

dukkhato no ca attato.

3.1

that bhikkhu sees rightly,

Sa ve sammaddaso bhikkhu,

3.2

peaceful, in love with the state of peace.

santo santipade rato;

3.3

They bear their final body,

Dhāreti antimaṁ dehaṁ,

3.4

having vanquished Māra and his mount.”

jetvā māraṁ savāhinin”ti.

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
