AN 4.11 Walking – Carasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, suppose a bhikkhu has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.

“Carato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā.

1.2

They tolerate it and don’t give it up, get rid of it, eliminate it, and obliterate it.

Tañce bhikkhu adhivāseti, nappajahati na vinodeti na byantīkaroti na anabhāvaṁ gameti,

Such a bhikkhu is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when walking.

carampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁbhūto ‘anātāpī anottāpī satataṁ samitaṁ kusīto hīnavīriyo’ti vuccati.

Suppose a bhikkhu has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while standing …

Whether walking or standing,

Caraṁ vā yadi vā tiṭṭhaṁ,

9.2

sitting or lying down,

nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;

9.3

if you think a bad thought

Yo vitakkaṁ vitakketi,

9.4

to do with the lay life,

pāpakaṁ gehanissitaṁ.

10.1

you’re on the wrong path,

Kummaggappaṭipanno so,

10.2

lost among things that delude.

Mohaneyyesu mucchito;

10.3

Such a bhikkhu is incapable

Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu,

10.4

of touching the highest awakening.

Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.

11.1

But one who, whether standing or walking,

Yo ca caraṁ vā tiṭṭhaṁ vā,

11.2

sitting or lying down,

Nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;

11.3

has calmed their thoughts,

Vitakkaṁ samayitvāna,

11.4

loving peace of mind;

Vitakkūpasame rato;

11.5

such a bhikkhu is capable

Bhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu,

11.6

of touching the highest awakening.”

Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttaman”ti.
