AN 4.10 Attachments – Yogasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, there are these four attachments.

“Cattārome, bhikkhave, yogā.

1.2

What four?

Katame cattāro?

1.3

The attachment to sensual pleasures, future lives, views, and ignorance.

Kāmayogo, bhavayogo, diṭṭhiyogo, avijjāyogo.

1.4

And what is the attachment to sensual pleasures?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kāmayogo?

1.5

It’s when you don’t truly understand sensual pleasures’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kāmānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

1.6

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for sensual pleasures linger on inside.

Tassa kāmānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ appajānato yo kāmesu kāmarāgo kāmanandī kāmasneho kāmamucchā kāmapipāsā kāmapariḷāho kāmajjhosānaṁ kāmataṇhā sānuseti.

This is called the attachment to sensual pleasures.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāmayogo.

1.8

Such is the attachment to sensual pleasures.

Iti kāmayogo.

2.1

And what is the attachment to future lives?

Bhavayogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

2.2

It’s when you don’t truly understand future lives’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bhavānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

2.3

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for continued existence linger on inside.

Tassa bhavānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ appajānato yo bhavesu bhavarāgo bhavanandī bhavasneho bhavamucchā bhavapipāsā bhavapariḷāho bhavajjhosānaṁ bhavataṇhā sānuseti.

2.4

This is called the attachment to future lives.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhavayogo.

2.5

Such are the attachments to sensual pleasures and future lives.

Iti kāmayogo bhavayogo.

3.1

And what is the attachment to views?

Diṭṭhiyogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

3.2

It’s when you don’t truly understand views’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco diṭṭhīnaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

3.3

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for views linger on inside.

Tassa diṭṭhīnaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ appajānato yo diṭṭhīsu diṭṭhirāgo diṭṭhinandī diṭṭhisneho diṭṭhimucchā diṭṭhipipāsā diṭṭhipariḷāho diṭṭhijjhosānaṁ diṭṭhitaṇhā sānuseti.

3.4

This is called the attachment to views.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, diṭṭhiyogo.

3.5

Such are the attachments to sensual pleasures, future lives, and views.

Iti kāmayogo bhavayogo diṭṭhiyogo.

4.1

And what is the attachment to ignorance?

Avijjāyogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

4.2

It’s when you don’t truly understand the six fields of contacts’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape,

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

4.3

so ignorance and unknowing of the six fields of contact linger on inside.

Tassa channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ appajānato yā chasu phassāyatanesu avijjā aññāṇaṁ sānuseti.

4.4

This is called the attachment to ignorance.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, avijjāyogo.

4.5

Such are the attachments to sensual pleasures, future lives, views, and ignorance.

Iti kāmayogo bhavayogo diṭṭhiyogo avijjāyogo,

4.6

These are bad, unskillful qualities that are corrupting, leading to future lives, hurtful, resulting in suffering and future rebirth, old age, and death. That’s why someone attached to them is called: ‘one who has not found sanctuary from attachments’.

saṁyutto pāpakehi akusalehi dhammehi saṅkilesikehi ponobhavikehi sadarehi dukkhavipākehi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇikehi. Tasmā ayogakkhemīti vuccati.

4.7

These are the four attachments.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro yogā.

5.1

There are these four kinds of detachment.

Cattārome, bhikkhave, visaṁyogā.

5.2

What four?

Katame cattāro?

5.3

Detachment from sensual pleasures, future lives, views, and ignorance.

Kāmayogavisaṁyogo, bhavayogavisaṁyogo, diṭṭhiyogavisaṁyogo, avijjāyogavisaṁyogo.

5.4

And what is detachment from sensual pleasures?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kāmayogavisaṁyogo?

5.5

It’s when you truly understand sensual pleasures’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco kāmānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

5.6

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for sensual pleasures don’t linger on inside.

Tassa kāmānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānato yo kāmesu kāmarāgo kāmanandī kāmasneho kāmamucchā kāmapipāsā kāmapariḷāho kāmajjhosānaṁ kāmataṇhā sā nānuseti.

5.7

This is called detachment from sensual pleasures.

Such is detachment from sensual pleasures.

Iti kāmayogavisaṁyogo.

6.1

And what is detachment from future lives?

Bhavayogavisaṁyogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

6.2

It’s when you truly understand future lives’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bhavānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

6.3

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for continued existence don’t linger on inside.

This is called detachment from future lives.

Iti kāmayogavisaṁyogo bhavayogavisaṁyogo.

7.1

And what is detachment from views?

Diṭṭhiyogavisaṁyogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

7.2

It’s when you truly understand views’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco diṭṭhīnaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

7.3

So greed, relishing, affection, infatuation, thirst, passion, attachment, and craving for views don’t linger on inside.

Tassa diṭṭhīnaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānato yo diṭṭhīsu diṭṭhirāgo diṭṭhinandī diṭṭhisneho diṭṭhimucchā diṭṭhipipāsā diṭṭhipariḷāho diṭṭhijjhosānaṁ diṭṭhitaṇhā sā nānuseti.

7.4

This is called detachment from views.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, diṭṭhiyogavisaṁyogo.

7.5

Such is detachment from sensual pleasures, future lives, and views.

Iti kāmayogavisaṁyogo bhavayogavisaṁyogo diṭṭhiyogavisaṁyogo.

8.1

And what is detachment from ignorance?

Avijjāyogavisaṁyogo ca kathaṁ hoti?

8.2

It’s when you truly understand the six fields of contacts’ origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape,

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

8.3

so ignorance and unknowing of the six fields of contact don’t linger on inside.

Tassa channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānato yā chasu phassāyatanesu avijjā aññāṇaṁ sā nānuseti.

8.4

This is called detachment from ignorance.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, avijjāyogavisaṁyogo.

8.5

Such is detachment from sensual pleasures, future lives, views, and ignorance.

Iti kāmayogavisaṁyogo bhavayogavisaṁyogo diṭṭhiyogavisaṁyogo avijjāyogavisaṁyogo,

8.6

These are bad, unskillful qualities that are corrupting, leading to future lives, hurtful, resulting in suffering and future rebirth, old age, and death. That’s why someone detached from them is called: ‘one who has found sanctuary from attachments’.

visaṁyutto pāpakehi akusalehi dhammehi saṅkilesikehi ponobhavikehi sadarehi dukkhavipākehi āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇikehi. Tasmā yogakkhemīti vuccati.

8.7

These are the four kinds of detachment.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro visaṁyogāti.

9.1

Attached to both sensual pleasures

Kāmayogena saṁyuttā,

9.2

and the desire to be reborn in a future life;

bhavayogena cūbhayaṁ;

9.3

attached also to views,

Diṭṭhiyogena saṁyuttā,

9.4

and governed by ignorance,

avijjāya purakkhatā.

10.1

sentient beings continue to transmigrate,

Sattā gacchanti saṁsāraṁ,

10.2

with ongoing birth and death.

jātimaraṇagāmino;

10.3

But those who completely understand sensual pleasures,

Ye ca kāme pariññāya,

10.4

and the attachment to all future lives;

bhavayogañca sabbaso.

11.1

with the attachment to views eradicated,

Diṭṭhiyogaṁ samūhacca,

11.2

and ignorance dispelled,

avijjañca virājayaṁ;

11.3

detached from all attachments,

Sabbayogavisaṁyuttā,

11.4

truly those sages have escaped their bonds.”

te ve yogātigā munī”ti.

11.5

Dasamaṁ.

11.6

Bhaṇḍagāmavaggo paṭhamo.

12.0

Tassuddānaṁ

12.1

Anubuddhaṁ papatitaṁ dve,

12.2

Khatā anusotapañcamaṁ;

12.3

Appassuto ca sobhanaṁ,

12.4

Vesārajjaṁ taṇhāyogena te dasāti.
