AN 4.4 Broken (2nd) – Dutiyakhatasutta

“When a foolish, incompetent bad person acts wrongly toward four people they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma.
“Catūsu, bhikkhave, micchā paṭipajjamāno bālo abyatto asappuriso khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati.

Mātari, bhikkhave, micchā paṭipajjamāno bālo abyatto asappuriso khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati.

father … a Realized One … and a disciple of a Realized One.
Pitari, bhikkhave, micchā paṭipajjamāno …pe… tathāgate, bhikkhave, micchā paṭipajjamāno …pe… tathāgatasāvake, bhikkhave, micchā paṭipajjamāno bālo abyatto asappuriso khataṁ upahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca apuññaṁ pasavati.

When an astute, competent good person acts rightly toward four people they keep themselves healthy and whole. They don’t deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much merit.
Catūsu, bhikkhave, sammā paṭipajjamāno paṇḍito viyatto sappuriso akkhataṁ anupahataṁ attānaṁ pariharati, anavajjo ca hoti ananuvajjo ca viññūnaṁ, bahuñca puññaṁ pasavati.

A person who does wrong
Mātari pitari cāpi,

by their mother or father,
yo micchā paṭipajjati;

or a Realized One, a Buddha,
Tathāgate vā sambuddhe,
3.4
or one of their disciples,
atha vā tassa sāvake;
3.5
makes much bad karma.
Bahuñca so pasavati,
3.6
apuññaṁ tādiso naro.
4.1
Because of their unprincipled conduct
Tāya naṁ adhammacariyāya,
4.2
toward their parents,
Mātāpitūsu paṇḍitā;
4.3
they’re criticized in this life by the astute,
Idheva naṁ garahanti,
4.4
and they depart to be reborn in a place of loss.
Peccāpāyañca gacchati.
5.1
A person who does right
Mātari pitari cāpi,
5.2
by their mother and father,
yo sammā paṭipajjati;
5.3
or a Realized One, a Buddha,
Tathāgate vā sambuddhe,
5.4
or one of their disciples,
atha vā tassa sāvake;
5.5
makes much merit.
Bahuñca so pasavati,
5.6
puññaṁ etādiso naro.
6.1
Because of their principled conduct
Tāya naṁ dhammacariyāya,
6.2
toward their parents,
mātāpitūsu paṇḍitā;
6.3
they’re praised in this life by the astute,
Idheva naṁ pasaṁsanti,
6.4
and they depart to rejoice in heaven.”
pecca sagge pamodatī”ti.
