AN 3.122 Sagacity – Moneyyasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, there are these three kinds of sagacity.

“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, moneyyāni.

What three?

Katamāni tīṇi?

1.3

Sagacity of body, speech, and mind.

Kāyamoneyyaṁ, vacīmoneyyaṁ, manomoneyyaṁ.

And what is sagacity of body?

Katamañca, bhikkhave, kāyamoneyyaṁ?

1.5

It’s when a bhikkhu doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or have sex.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, abrahmacariyā paṭivirato hoti.

This is called ‘sagacity of body’.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāyamoneyyaṁ.

2.1

And what is sagacity of speech?

Katamañca, bhikkhave, vacīmoneyyaṁ?

2.2

It’s when a bhikkhu doesn’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti.

This is called ‘sagacity of speech’.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vacīmoneyyaṁ.

3.1

And what is sagacity of mind?

Katamañca, bhikkhave, manomoneyyaṁ?

3.2

It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

3.3

This is called ‘sagacity of mind’.

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, manomoneyyaṁ.

3.4

These are the three kinds of sagacity.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi moneyyānīti.

4.1

A sage in body, a sage in speech,

Kāyamuniṁ vacīmuniṁ,

4.2

a sage undefiled in heart;

cetomuniṁ anāsavaṁ;

4.3

a sage, blessed with sagacity,

Muniṁ moneyyasampannaṁ,

4.4

has given up everything, they say.”

āhu sabbappahāyinan”ti.

Dasamaṁ.

4.6

Āpāyikavaggo dutiyo.

Tassuddānaṁ

5.1

Āpāyiko dullabho appameyyaṁ,

5.2

Āneñjavipattisampadā;

5.3

Apaṇṇako ca kammanto,

5.4

Dve soceyyāni moneyyanti.
