AN 3.120 Purity (1st) – Paṭhamasoceyyasutta
1.1
“Bhikkhū, there are these three kinds of purity.
“Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, soceyyāni.

What three?
Katamāni tīṇi?
1.3
Purity of body, speech, and mind.
Kāyasoceyyaṁ, vacīsoceyyaṁ, manosoceyyaṁ.

And what is purity of body?
Katamañca, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaṁ?
1.5
It’s when someone doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti, adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti, kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato hoti.
1.6
This is called ‘purity of body’.
Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāyasoceyyaṁ.

And what is purity of speech?
Katamañca, bhikkhave, vacīsoceyyaṁ?
2.2
It’s when someone doesn’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco musāvādā paṭivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paṭivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paṭivirato hoti.

This is called ‘purity of speech’.
Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vacīsoceyyaṁ.
3.1
And what is purity of mind?
Katamañca, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaṁ?
3.2
It’s when someone is content, kind-hearted, and has right view.
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco anabhijjhālu hoti abyāpannacitto sammādiṭṭhiko.
3.3
This is called ‘purity of mind’.
Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, manosoceyyaṁ.
3.4
These are the three kinds of purity.”
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi soceyyānī”ti.
