AN 3.115 Immeasurable – Appameyyasutta

 

1.1

Bhikkhū, these three people are found in the world.

“Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What three?

Katame tayo?

1.3

Someone easy to measure, someone hard to measure, and someone who is immeasurable.

Suppameyyo, duppameyyo, appameyyo.

And who is the person easy to measure?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo suppameyyo?

1.5

It’s a person who is restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and samādhi, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo uddhato hoti unnaḷo capalo mukharo vikiṇṇavāco muṭṭhassati asampajāno asamāhito vibbhantacitto pākatindriyo.

This is called ‘a person easy to measure’.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo suppameyyo.

And who is the person hard to measure?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo duppameyyo?

2.2

It’s a person who is not restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, or loose-tongued. They have established mindfulness, situational awareness and samādhi, with unified mind and restrained faculties.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo anuddhato hoti anunnaḷo acapalo amukharo avikiṇṇavāco upaṭṭhitassati sampajāno samāhito ekaggacitto saṁvutindriyo.

This is called ‘a person hard to measure’.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo duppameyyo.

3.1

And who is the immeasurable person?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo appameyyo?

3.2

It’s a bhikkhu who is perfected, and has ended defilements.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaṁ hoti khīṇāsavo.

3.3

This is called ‘an immeasurable person’.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, puggalo appameyyo.

3.4

These are the three people found in the world.”

Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
