AN 3.90 Three Trainings (2nd) – Dutiyasikkhattayasutta

1.1

Bhikkhū, these are the three trainings.

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, sikkhā.

1.2

What three?

Katamā tisso?

1.3

The training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.

Adhisīlasikkhā, adhicittasikkhā, adhipaññāsikkhā.

2.1

And what is the training in the higher ethics?

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhisīlasikkhā?

2.2

It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the code of conduct, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu.

2.3

This is called the training in the higher ethics.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhisīlasikkhā.

3.1

And what is the training in the higher mind?

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhā?

3.2

It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption … second absorption … third absorption … fourth absorption.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe… catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.

3.3

This is called the training in the higher mind.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhicittasikkhā.

4.1

And what is the training in the higher wisdom?

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, adhipaññāsikkhā?

4.2

It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

4.3

This is called the training in the higher wisdom.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, adhipaññāsikkhā.

4.4

These are the three trainings.

Imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso sikkhāti.

sato guttindriyo care.

6.1

As before, so after;

Yathā pure tathā pacchā,

6.2

as after, so before.

they call them a ‘trainee on the path’,
