AN 3.25 Like Diamond – Vajirūpamasutta

 

1.1

“These three people are found in the world.

“Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

What three?

Katame tayo?

1.3

A person with a mind like an open sore, a person with a mind like lightning, and a person with a mind like diamond.

Arukūpamacitto puggalo, vijjūpamacitto puggalo, vajirūpamacitto puggalo.

And who has a mind like an open sore?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, arukūpamacitto puggalo?

1.5

It’s someone who is irritable and bad-tempered.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo

1.6

Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness.

appampi vutto samāno abhisajjati kuppati byāpajjati patitthīyati kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti.

1.7

They’re like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, duṭṭhāruko kaṭṭhena vā kaṭhalāya vā ghaṭṭito bhiyyoso mattāya āsavaṁ deti;

In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.

evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upāyāsabahulo

Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, arukūpamacitto puggalo.

2.1

And who has a mind like lightning?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, vijjūpamacitto puggalo?

2.2

It’s someone who truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhasamudayo’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodho’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

They’re like a person with keen eyes in the dark of the night, who sees by a flash of lightning.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cakkhumā puriso rattandhakāratimisāyaṁ vijjantarikāya rūpāni passeyya;

In the same way, someone truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.

evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

This is called a person with a mind like lightning.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vijjūpamacitto puggalo.

3.1

And who has a mind like diamond?

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, vajirūpamacitto puggalo?

3.2

It’s someone who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

3.3

It’s like a diamond, which can’t be cut by anything at all, not even a gem or a stone.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, vajirassa natthi kiñci abhejjaṁ maṇi vā pāsāṇo vā;

In the same way, someone realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. …

evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… upasampajja viharati.

3.5

This is called a person with a mind like diamond.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vajirūpamacitto puggalo.

3.6

These are the three people found in the world.”

Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
